AI Impact on Jobs, Economy and Public: PEW Report

A recent PEW report surveyed experts and the general public on the impact of artificial intelligence, or AI. According to the report, AI experts have a positive view of it and are more likely to believe it will have a positive impact on the US economy than the general public.

56 percent of experts believe that AI will have a positive impact on the US economy in the 2020s, while only 17 percent of the public agrees. Experts are more optimistic that AI will not only improve people’s jobs but also the economy as a whole. In contrast, a large portion of the public is concerned that AI will have a negative impact on their jobs, especially where traditional human labor is needed.

The report states that “experts believe that AI will be more likely to affect me and that it will eliminate many women.” These professions include cashiers (73 percent of experts agree), truck drivers (62 percent), journalists (60 percent), field workers (60 percent), and software consultants (50 percent). The public also agrees with the experts’ views about them, but the public has different opinions about truck drivers. Only 33 percent of the public believes that AI is causing problems for truck drivers.

Both experts and the public agree on this. Both groups also agree that AI will not have a good impact on the accuracy of news and election coverage. In addition, both have more control over the use of AI, and also feel that it is not appropriate for the government to regulate its use.
