In the wake of a surge in online job scams, especially against jobless youth and freelancers, Pakistan's National Computer Emergency Response Team (National CERT) has issued an advisory to help protect the people from falling prey to online scams and blackmail.
A New Trap on Social Media
Social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram have become havens for cybercrime gangs. The scammers lure individuals—especially students, job applicants, and freelancers—into fake job opportunities or freelancing work, then trap them in serious scams later.
These offenders have a tendency to:
• Put victims in fake WhatsApp groups posing as recruiters, the advisory adds.
• Share materials in the group and later blackmail vulnerable users.
• Impersonate police officers and extort money (10 to 15 lakh rupees) from victims.
• Fake accounts and profiles for establishing trust and deceiving users.
Who's at Risk?
• Unemployed youth looking for quick income
• Freelancers looking for jobs online
• Students looking for temporary job openings

The attackers first approach victims with promising job opportunities, sometimes in remote freelancing or data entry tasks. After establishing trust, they start emotionally, psychologically, and financially exploiting users.
National CERT's Key Recommendations:
Don't Join Unknown WhatsApp and Social Media Groups:
Leave any group that looks suspicious or contains indecent material.
Never Share Explicit Content:
It is a crime under Pakistani cyber laws to share such content.
Restrict Privacy Settings:
Restrict who can view your social media updates and contact you.
Use Only Reliable Freelance Sites:
Use authentic websites like Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer, and PeoplePerHour.
Do Not Trust Unverified Job Offers:
Research the company and the job advertisement prior to giving out any personal details.
Report Blackmail Immediately:
If you are being blackmailed or harassed, do not stay quiet. Utilize these official channels:
• National CERT
• PTA Complaint Portal
• NCCIA (National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency)
Final Thoughts
Online work and freelancing are great opportunities-but only if approached carefully. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Protect yourself, educate your peers, and report suspicious activities right away.
Stay informed. Stay safe.
